Volcano Walk

No scientist visiting Edinburgh can leave without exploring Edinburgh’s extinct volcano, Arthur’s Seat and to follow in the footsteps of James Hutton, the Father of Modern Geology. The walk will examine the strata beneath the volcano to set the scene of what Edinburgh was like 350 million years ago and will then move on to see what was happening in the plumbing beneath the volcano and to explore the superstructure of the volcano itself. The walk will finish at the second most important geological locality in the world, Hutton’s section, where this medic, farmer and chemist discovered that magmatic processes had formed the Salisbury Craigs.
